Sangee 'laas (Good Day)

On behalf of Tahayghen Elementary School I would like to pass on my best wishes and heartfelt thanks to all Indigenous people in Haida Gwaii, Canada, and around the world on National Indigenous Peoples Day. Having grown up in Haida Gwaii and spent some of my formative years in Australia I have been priviliged to have been surrounded by the rich culture and traditions of some of the most amazing Indigenous people in the world. This morning I will speak to the students about Buffy St Marie, an inspiring singer, songwriter, and activist from the Piapot Cree First Nation, whom I was priviliged enough to see perform at the Edge of the World Music Festival. Later today, a selection of Tahayghen students have the opportunity to visit Chritian Whites Longhouse and participate in cultural activities happening in Gaw Tlagee (Old Masset). We hope that everyone is able to recognize National Indigenous Peoples Day in whatever way they are able and to recognize the many important Indigenous people that enrich our lives everyday.

Hawaa
