TEMPORARY SPECIAL EDUCATION RESOURCE TEACHER – ALM and SNES

An employment opportunity exists for a temporary part-time (0.6 FTE) Special Education Resource Teacher at Agnes L. Mather and Sk’aadgaa Naay Elementary Schools effective October 5, 2018 to December 21, 2018.  This position is designed to support teachers and provide services to students who have mild to moderate difficulties in learning and/or behaviour.  The Special Education Resource Teacher will participate as a member of the school-based teams, refer students to district services and review/monitor programs established for students.

Requirements:

  • A university teaching major, or its equivalent, directly related to the teaching position.
  • Working knowledge of and experience in Indigenous education.
  • Ability to teach students to develop learning strategies for use in classroom settings or for independent learning.
  • Ability to teach skill development or remediation.
  • Ability to develop strategies for dealing with mild emotional or behavioural difficulties.
  • Ability to advocate for students to ensure appropriate differentiated instructional strategies, program adaptations and access to other support services are in place.
  • Possess an understanding of and an ability to assist in the development and execution of Individual Education Planning and Behavioural Plans.
  • Proven interpersonal skills, work ethic and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, teachers, education assistants, parents and administrators.
  • Teacher Regulation Branch certification.

Temporary Education Assistant – PCES

START DATE:  Effective September 25, 2018 to October 5, 2018
SALARY:  $25.31 per hour; $26.70 per hour with recognized formal Education Assistant training
HOURS OF WORK:  Four (4) hours per day, five (5) days per week

The Education Assistant performs a variety of duties related to working with students and the preparation of teaching materials.  This position works under the supervision of the Principal and will in the course of duties take direction from individual teachers.

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 graduation preferably supplemented by courses in Special Education.
  • One to two years of formal training beyond graduation, in a field related to the assignment.
  • Knowledge of American Sign Language an asset.
  • Ability to work with a student in a one-on-one setting.
  • Ability to use courtesy and tact in the exploration and discussion of information with internal contracts.
  • Ability to use judgement in applying rules and procedures.
  • Knowledge of behaviour management techniques and task analysis techniques desirable.
  • Basic skills in computer operations.
  • Operate equipment such as photocopying machines, audiovisual equipment, typewriter, laminator and binding machine.
  • Recognize and respect the confidential nature of all information related to students, parents and staff.

Casual Custodian – North and South

START DATE:  Effective As Soon As Possible 
SALARY:  $23.88 per hour, plus a shift premium of $0.60 when applicable

The Custodian is responsible for the cleanliness, security, and energy conservation of the building to which assigned.  Receives direction from the Working Foreman and is required from time-to-time to carry-out requests of the School Staff.

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 level of education is required.
  • Previous training and/or experience in janitorial procedures would be an asset or the willingness to learn and maintain safe and proper cleaning techniques.
  • Maintain familiarity with Workplace Hazardous materials Information System (WHMIS) and Workers Compensation Board (WCB) safety regulations.
  • Possess the ability to read and comprehend written instructions and “safety” warning of the products the employee uses and use such products safely.
  • Possess mechanical aptitude to operate such janitorial equipment that is used within the facility, proper use and care.
  • Possess the ability to meet and deal tactfully with students, members of staff and the public.
  • The position is one that has inherent sensory and physical tasks and as such the job requires the capability to perform tasks such as lifting, pushing, holding, reaching, bending and carrying.
  • The position is one that is primarily indoors but occasionally requires going outside and at times unpleasant tasks are called for owing to the nature of the work.
  • Must be able to work alone, but be co-operative with peers when major tasks are encountered.
  • Trained in WCB Level I First Aid or better, or the willingness to obtain the same.

Teachers Teaching on Call

School District No. 50 (Haida Gwaii) requires the services of Teachers Teaching On Call. The district hires both certified teachers and non-certified substitutes to replace regular teachers when they are absent. Individual assignments may last from half days to a few weeks.
