Temporary Partial Haida Immersion Teacher

An employment opportunity exists at Tahayghen Elementary School for a temporary part-time (0.4 FTE) Haida Immersion Teacher effective September 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018.

This teaching opportunity exists for an enthusiastic individual to teach a Haida Immersion programme.  The individual needs to be comfortable and capable with speaking in Haida 80% or more of the time to a small group of young students during several hours of play based learning.  Singing, dancing, telling stories, going for walks, discovering the world around you and playing could all be part of the activities this person would engage in.  The purpose of the programme is to provide young students the opportunity to be exposed to and engaged in the Haida language.

While a teaching degree is preferred, the emphasis for this position is on speaking Haida.  The successful candidate would be responsible to plan, create, and implement activities for primary aged children.  Knowledge of Haida culture and traditions, an ability to connect and co-ordinate activities with others in the community, and the energy to work with young children would be significant assets.

Teachers currently employed with the district who are interested in this vacancy need only submit a letter of intent detailing their fluency of the Haida language, recent experience teaching Haida to primary students and what they have accomplished in the last year to improve their Haida proficiency.  Please send letter of intent by Tuesday, June 27 at 12:00 noon to:
