An employment opportunity exists at Sk’aadgaa Naay Elementary School for a continuing part-time (0.2 FTE) Haida Immersion Teacher effective September 1, 2017.
This teaching opportunity exists for an enthusiastic individual to teach a Haida Immersion programme. The individual needs to be comfortable and capable with speaking in Haida 80% or more of the time to a small group of young students during several hours of play based learning. Singing, dancing, telling stories, going for walks, discovering the world around you and playing could all be part of the activities this person would engage in with Kindergarten to Grade 2 students. The purpose of the programme is to provide young students the opportunity to be exposed to and engaged in the Haida language.
While a teaching degree is preferred, the emphasis for this position is on speaking Haida. The successful candidate would be responsible to plan, create, and implement activities for primary aged children. Knowledge of Haida culture and traditions, an ability to connect and co-ordinate activities with others in the community, and the energy to work with young children would be significant assets.
